No Bones About It, 'Anna Rexia' Eating Disorder Costume For Sale Online

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Vampires, zombies, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are among the most popular Halloween costume this year, but a different kind of costume is causing a stir… no bones about it.

On Oct. 31, women can dress up as "Anna Rexia," a costume that makes fun of anorexia and our culture's obsession with being thin. There is even a plus size version available.

"Anna Rexia," sold on several sites including SupermodelBoutique.com, is described as follows: "You can never be too rich or too thin."

And it will cost you under $35.

The five-piece costume comes with a "knit dress with glitter screenprint. Includes headband, choker neckband, removable "Anna Rexia" badge," the online costume shop says.

It even includes a measuring tape to tie around your waist.

The costume was designed by Dreamgirl International in 2007. The manufacturer has since discontinued it due to low sales, but the "Anna Rexia" surplus is still available online.

Alicia Brockwell of Dreamgirl told the Los Angeles Times, "We don't want to hurt anyone's feelings and would never want to cause harm to anyone. Dreamgirl is a company run by women for women. Halloween is an eccentric and irreverent holiday for people to express themselves in a myriad of ways. While some people may not like a particular costume, it is a matter of taste and personal discretion."

Nearly 10 million women in the U.S. suffer from eating disorders, according to the National Eating Disorder Association . . . and the costume is not tickling everyone's funny bones.

William Walters of NEDA, told The Village Voice, "It makes light of something really serious… It's hard for us to find it funny."
