Torrance Thieves Brave Deadly Chemicals In Fumigated Home Burglaries

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Police said Thursday several Torrance homes tented for fumigation recently have become big targets for burglars.

KNX 1070's Ron Kilgore reports police are seeing a sharp uptick in what they say is an extremely high-risk crime.

"It's extremely dangerous to be exposed to the chemicals which they use," said Torrance Police Dept. spokesman Sgt. Steve Jenkinson said. "It's surprising that anyone would want to go in and commit a theft or anything else when you're exposed to those type of chemicals."

The thieves have been stealing TVs, computers, jewelry and cash from the fumigated homes, Jenkinson said.

Police believe the perpetrators could be following fumigation companies and planning their heists once the tents go up.

Neighbors in the area are being urged to call 911 if they notice any suspicious activity near fumigated homes.

"If they see anybody suspicious or out of place going near these tented houses, give the police a call right away so we can make sure no crime is being committed," said Jenkinson.
