Signal Hill Man, 21, Arrested As Suspect In Shooting Of 2 USC Students

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Police have announced the arrest of a suspect in the shooting of two USC students wounded at an off-campus party on September 4.

The suspect is identified as 21-year-old Tyson Tyree Smith, a Signal Hill resident. Police said Smith was arrested Wednesday.

The shootings happened just after 2 a.m. in an apartment near campus, according to police.

Officials said the two wounded students -- a woman shot in the finger and a male shot in the stomach -- had interrupted a theft in progress. They said the suspect was trying to make off with Dr. Dre headphones.

The names of the victims were not released. The woman was treated at the scene. The male victim, more seriously wounded, was transported to a hospital. He was released from the hospital Thursday.

According to LAPD Officer Diana Figueroa,  the female victim helped saved the male victim's life by performing CPR and keeping him breathing until paramedics arrived.

Detectives reportedly used video and photos taken at the party to identify Smith.

The suspect is being held without bail at the LAPD's 77th Street Jail, according to court records.
