Fight The Signs Of Aging With JJ Virgin

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — If you're looking for a way to turn back the aging clock, we may have the perfect prescription! Certified nutrition specialist and fitness instructor JJ Virgin stopped by KCAL9 Thursday to spill her anti-aging secrets.

JJ's Tips:

1. Get more sleep. It's not called beauty sleep for nothing! When you're asleep all the cells in your body repair and recover. Daily stress ages your face and body because of the release of cortisol and the increase of bad neurotransmitters like norepinephrine. JJ explains why you should set your alarm to go off at night as well as the morning.

2. Eat smaller meals to regulate digestion, metabolism and hormone levels. Overeating is directly linked to reduced longevity. Large meals accelerate aging by creating more free radicals and impairing digestion, metabolism and hormone balance. Reducing calorie consumption is not just good for people trying to lose weight, but research shows that reducing food intake protects cells against aging and age-related diseases.

3. Have a healthy love life. An active sex life is important for brain and heart health. Low libido and/or sexual performance issues can be early warning signs of everything from cardiovascular disease and hypertension to thyroid disease or other hormonal disorders.

4. Listen to music and read books from your childhood. In one study at Harvard University, people who were placed in an environment that resembled their youth -- with movies, music, and memorabilia from the past -- experienced marked improvements in their memory, vision, happiness level, and overall health.

5. Strength training. The right kind of strength-training can help you feel 10, 20, even 30 years younger. Strengthening your muscles leaves you less vulnerable to injuries and builds your stamina.
