LAPD Continues Probe Into Officer's Shooting In South LA

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Investigators are trying to determine what saved a police officer from getting shot two weeks ago in south Los Angeles.

"The initial reports we had at the command post was that he was wearing a vest and that that vest probably saved his life." Los Angeles Police Department Commander Andy Smith said.

The officer, identified as a seven-year LAPD veteran, was not wearing a vest at the time of the shooting, according to new reports released by the hospital.

Police believe his car's windshield or door kept the bullet from penetrating when it hit his upper right chest.

Darvin Cook, 25, was taken into custody by police and is being charged of attempted murder among other charges.

A 16-year-old juvenile was also picked up for questioning.

The wounded officer should have been wearing a vest, according to government policy, and is recovering from hand surgery.
