JC Penney Pulls 'Too Pretty To Do Homework' Shirt For Young Girls

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Too pretty to do homework? Go to JC Penney.

The retailer was selling a girls shirt, sizes 7-16, that declared," I'm too pretty to do my homework so by brother has to do it for me."

The caption next to shirt advertised online read: "Who has time for homework when there's a new Justin Bieber album out? She'll love this tee that's just as cute and sassy as she is."

Apparently its time to forget school and dream about boys.

The shirt, originally sold for $16.99, was on sale for $9.99 before the chain removed it from their shelves and the store's website after news of the controversial shirt went viral.

A petition was also started on Change.org by a Brooklyn, NY woman that targeted Chairman and CEO of JC Penney, Mike Ulman III. As of 10 a.m., it had more that 1,600 signatures.

"I am deeply offended at the encouragement of young girls to value their looks over their smarts. I find it ridiculous that any major department store would find this funny or even cute. It isn't and your buyers should have known better! Shame on you JC Penney!!!," petitioner Heather Evans wrote.

JC Penney apologized Wednesday for the shirt and issued the following statement: "jcpenney is committed to being America's destination for great style and great value for the whole family. We agree that the "Too pretty" t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize to our customers and are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect."
