Two cars — a white sedan and a Grey SUV — boxed in the merchant's car at Bel Air and Burbank as he drove away from a friend's home on Hatteras Street on Thursday night, according to police.

As many as six men wearing gloves, masks and dressed in black smashed the car windows, assaulted the driver and fled with the bag of jewels.

The merchant was reportedly unarmed and without any security personnel.

"Clearly, some mistakes were made," said North Hollywood Division Sgt. Mike Kammert.

Police have recovered an SUV that might have been used in the crime after it struck a fire hydrant in the area.

Due to the size and sophistication of the robbery, LAPD Robbery Homicide and or Commercial Crimes may take over the investigation, Kammert said.
