'Puppy Mills' Behind Proposed Ban On Dog, Cat Sales At Glendale Pet Stores

GLENDALE (CBS) — The days of going to the local pet store to find a new best friend may soon be over in the city of Glendale.

KNX 1070's Vytas Safronikas reports the city is on the verge of passing a ban on dog and cat sales at retail stores.

Officials said the goal of the ban is to promote pet adoption and cut down on so-called "puppy mills" that have sprung up in Glendale and throughout Los Angeles County.

A final vote on the measure is expected next Tuesday.

"If it's adopted by the council, it will prohibit retail pet stores from selling dogs and cats," said Chief Asst. City Attorney Mike Garcia.

The ban would not apply to individuals with a dog or cat that has a litter and want to dispose of that litter through a sale or a giveaway.

If approved, the measure would force pet stores in Glendale to transition to a pet adoption model that offers pets one would normally adopt from a local animal shelter.

Private party pet sales would not be affected by the proposed ban, Garcia said.
