Driver Escapes Fiery Crash That Kills Passenger

 
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (CBS) — One person was killed and another injured in a fiery crash in San Juan Capistrano Tuesday, authorities said.

The driver of the 2011 Jeep was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle, which tumbled down an embankment and caught fire at Blue Fin Drive and Del Obispo Street. It then rolled over, into a utility building at Marco Forster Middle School just before 4 p.m., Orange County sheriff's Lt. Colin Murphy said.

The driver managed to free himself from the wreckage, with the help of students who witnessed the crash. He was not seriously injured. The other passenger was killed when the vehicle caught fire, Murphy said.

The driver was taken to Mission Hospital, according to the Orange County Register. The extent of his injuries was unknown.

The passenger's identity was withheld pending positive identification of
the remains and notification of the victim's relatives.
