Subway Shut Down After Man Mistakenly Flees Arrest Through LA Tunnel

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A section of the Metro Red Line train tunnel was shut down and train services delayed after a 51-year-old man ran a nearly mile-long segment of the tunnel, sheriff's officials said Thursday.

Bret Aron Newman ran from the Hollywood and Vine station to the Hollywood and Western station while deputies were conducting a fare operation on Wednesday afternoon, said Sgt. Sergio Flores of the sheriff's Transit Bureau which patrols Metro facilities.

Deputies notified rail authorities that a man ran into the train tunnel and Metro shut off power in the south tunnel to prevent Newman from being electrocuted, Flores said.

Train service was delayed and Newman was taken into custody when he emerged at Hollywood and Western station by waiting deputies, Flores said.

Newman told deputies he ran the nearly mile distance because he thought he had an arrest warrant, Flores said.

"We do get people on the tracks sometimes, but this is not something I see happening regularly," Flores said.
