Laguna Woods Poodle Becomes Latest Victim In OC Coyote Attacks

MISSION VIEJO (CBS) — Residents in Orange County continue to be plagued by pet-snatching coyotes despite a recent public awareness campaign about the threat.

KNX 1070's Mike Landa reports the latest victim is a small parti poodle named Mocha.

Andrea Peck said her mother was letting the beloved pooch out of the front gate of their home when a coyote suddenly appeared.

Peck said after a brief struggle, the coyote and Mocha were both gone.

"The leash came off of his neck and my mother fell backwards," she said. "Fortunately there was a cardboard box in her patio, and her head fell on the box which saved her life."

Peck added that her mother — who is on blood-thinning medication — would likely not have otherwise survived the fall.

The attack comes as neighboring residents in Anaheim recently hired a trapper to catch the coyotes that have recently been seen in the area.

Residents in Laguna Woods, meanwhile, are calling on security to be more proactive in warning seniors when coyotes are seen and how to react when confronted with the wild animals.
