SoCal Airports Among Nation's Cheapest - Except For LAX

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — If you're looking to save a few bucks on your next flight out of town, stay away from Los Angeles International Airport.

A survey of 101 airports by CheapFlights.com released Friday found three of the most affordable airports from which to fly out are in the Southland: Long Beach is the least expensive in all of the U.S., followed by Burbank (#2) and John Wayne Airport (#5).

And LAX? The nation's third-busiest airport is also the 88th-least expensive in the U.S.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports the average fare at Long Beach runs about $233 per ticket compared with $484 at LAX.

"It costs less because the flights don't go international or a lot of places," said traveler Ed Howard. "The base rate is lower...the budget airlines fly out of here."

The airports are home to regional carriers with short haul frequent flights and few cross-country or international flights and carriers.
