Compton City Council Approves Controversial Budget, Job Cuts

COMPTON (CBS) — The Compton City Council has voted to approve a controversial budget that will eliminate 91 jobs and 90 vacant positions.

"We are appalled. We are appalled on every level," Cheryl Parisi of the Coalition of Compton Unions told CBS2. "This budget will decimate services to the city of Compton. It involves the reduction of over 30 percent of the workforce."

However, council members staved off bankruptcy by balancing the budget. They also cut off threats from the city treasurer, who said he would stop cutting payroll checks to city employees.

Unions and employees say they will now file a lawsuit accusing the council of violating the city charter and abusing its power.
