Paris Hilton's Alleged Stalker Pleads Not Guilty
VAN NUYS (CBS) — A man arrested outside Paris Hilton's Malibu home has been charged with felony stalking and other counts for allegedly failing to stay away from the socialite.
James Brian Rainford, 36, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was ordered jailed in lieu of $150,000. He is due back in court July 26 for a preliminary hearing.
Rainford last week pleaded not guilty to the original charge. He was arrested on the Fourth of July after authorities received a call about a man standing on the beach and looking into Hilton's home in the 21000 block of Pacific Coast Highway, according to sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.
Deputies were directed by paparazzi to Rainford, who was arrested without incident, Whitmore said.
Rainford attacked Hilton's then-boyfriend, Cy Waits, on April 27 before Waits entered a Van Nuys courthouse to testify in the case of Nathan Parada, who was later convicted of an attempted residential burglary at the heiress' home on Aug. 24, 2010.
Rainford pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge on April 28 and was found to be in violation of his probation from a case involving an earlier run-in with a Hilton bodyguard. He was immediately sentenced to 227 days in jail and three years probation. He was released from jail on May 20.
Rainford -- who was ordered last Oct. 13 to stay away from Hilton and Waits -- was being held in lieu of $150,000 bail. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
