San Bernardino County Suspends Burning Permits In Fire-Prone Areas
SAN BERNARDINO (AP) — As Southern California heads into a heat wave, the state Department of Forestry and Fire protection has suspended all burning permits on state-responsibility lands in San Bernardino County because of extreme potential for wildfires.
The suspension went into effect at 6 a.m. Friday, excluding incorporated cities, and the use of campfires is being restricted to facilities within established public campgrounds.
San Bernardino Unit Chief Tim McClelland says the large grass crop that grew across Southern California wildlands has dried out and the burning permit suspension is aimed at reducing accidental fire starts.
The National Weather Service says high pressure over the Four Corners region will dominate Southern California's weather through next week, raising temperatures above seasonal normals. Independence Day is expected to be the hottest period of the heat wave.
