10 Illegal Immigrants Detained In Malibu Human Trafficking

MALIBU (AP) — Immigration authorities have detained 10 suspected illegal immigrants in the Malibu area -- part of a trend by Mexican smugglers to bring their human cargo farther north by boat.

Federal immigration spokeswoman Virginia Kice says authorities detained 10 people shortly before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. She says a woman suffered a broken nose and a man broke a leg while coming ashore and were hospitalized.

The U.S. Coast Guard searched for the boat but didn't find it.

Drug and human traffickers had been using small panga boats to reach San Diego County but Kice says they've moved farther north in recent months, into Orange and Los Angeles counties.

In March, an empty boat was found as far north as Ventura County.
