Poll: One-Fourth Of Calif. Voters Rarely Follow Politics

SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) — If you're reading this, you are likely considered a minority in the state of California.

One-fourth of all registered voters in the state say they "only now and then (or) hardly at all" pay attention to the latest developments in government and politics, according to a new Field Poll.

The survey released Monday shows those numbers are actually an improvement from 20 percent in 1999 and 16 percent in 1979.

41 percent say they follow political news most of the time while about 33 percent say they follow it some of the time.

Voters who consider themselves independents were the least likely to say they follow political news closely.

The Field Poll surveyed 950 registered voters by phone from June 3-13. The poll has a sampling error rate of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
