LA County Supervisors OK Payment In Death Of Man Killed By Forklift

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County supervisors have authorized an $810,000 payment to the family of an 86-year-old man who died after being struck by a forklift at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the settlement was authorized Tuesday.

A county investigation found that Andrew Bagsiao was crossing the driveway at a hospital loading dock in May 2009, when he was struck by the forklift and killed.

The county employee, who was operating the forklift, didn't realize he had hurt the elderly man until he felt the vehicle run over an object.

Bagsiao's adult children accused the employee of negligence in operating the forklift.

The county says it instituted a training requirement for staffers operating forklifts and cordoned off areas where forklifts were in use following the accident.
