OC Deputy's Gun, Badge Stolen From Car In La Mirada

LA MIRADA (CBS) — Two Glock handguns, a badge and identification were stolen from an off-duty Orange County sheriff's deputy's when his personal vehicle was burglarized in a La Mirada parking lot, sheriff's officials said Thursday.

The burglary happened between 7 and 9 p.m. Wednesday at Clearman's North Woods Inn in the 14300 block of Firestone Boulevard, near Valley View Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said.

KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports one local law enforcement official is calling on the perpetrators to do the right thing.

"I think they should turn themselves in," said Orange County Sheriff's Lieutenant Stu Greenberg. "Obviously, we don't want weapons or identification in somebody else's hands."

The suspect allegedly took two possibly loaded Glock handguns from inside a black duffel bag in the deputy's car, officials said.

Despite any personal embarrassment over the incident, Greenberg said the deputy will most likely be back on duty without delay.

"Assuming that he's done nothing wrong — which as far as I know is the case — he'll be reissued weapons and a badge and he'll continue to work," said Greenberg.

Sheriff's Lieutenant Frank Rivera said it is possible that the guns and badge might be used by someone to impersonate an officer.

No suspect information was available.
