Body Discovered After A Brush Fire Was Extinguished In La Palma

LA PALMA (CBS) — Police say a man whose body was found burning in the parking lot of a La Palma strip mall may have committed suicide.

The Orange County Fire Authority was first alerted to a small brush fire at 6:18 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Moody and Orangethorpe avenues. They found the burned body of an Asian male between the age of 40 and 60 years old after the fire was extinguished.

Police say the have reason to believe it could be a suicide.

"We're not seeing any sign of struggle. We found a gas can in the area next to the individual. It looks like it is based on the fact that when 911 call came through, the individual was by himself and the witness didn't see anyone else in the area," La Palma police Sgt. Raul Morales said.

Moody Street was closed between Houston and Orangethorpe avenues while the La Palma Police Department investigated.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
