CYPRESS (AP) — A Southern California motorcycle officer, who was killed while escorting the funeral of another law enforcement officer, is being remembered at his own memorial service.

Hundreds of officers from several states gathered Friday to remember 44-year-old Hawthorne Police Officer Andrew Garton. Friends described him as a selfless, devoted officer and father of two who was considered a mentor to younger officers.

State Attorney General Kamala D. Harris told his children: “In the eyes of California, your dad is a hero.”

Garton, a seven-year veteran, was killed last month while escorting a funeral procession for another officer who had died of cancer. Garton’s motorcycle collided with that of another officer, who suffered a broken leg.

Garton was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the department’s 89-year history.

“In the eyes of California, your dad is a hero.”, This statement is true. May God comfort you on this terrible lost, a father, a husband, a friend, a son is gone from your side, but he will live in your hearts forever.. My thoughts and prayers go to his family. If you need a memorial tribute for this hero, We use the service of a company in Pasadena, memorials by adolfo and they made a beautiful marker for our sister.

6:30 pm a few hours after this funeral..a motorcycle police officer leaving the grave side service was involved in yet another traffic accident…involving a motorcycle and a small pick up truck..the officer was injured but as of 6;35 he was doing ok witha few broken ribs…

  6. concerned says:

Leave the escorting to the professional funeral escorts….. the first motor officers death would have never occured if not for the arrogance of the sergeant who dismissed the Escort because he “wasn’t equipped to do the job…let the experts do it! ” And now this…. we don’t tell you how to run a dui checkpoint, let us run the processions …safely.
