LOS ANGELES (CBS) — At least one official is pledging to clean up the restrooms along beaches in Los Angeles County after a rise in complaints that budget cuts have left the restrooms unsanitary.

KNX 1070’s Ed Mertz reports L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has asked the Department of Beaches and Harbors to find other ways to save money after receiving a large number of complaints about dirty bathrooms at public beaches.

Yaroslavsky says public restrooms at county beaches pose a health issue now that cleaning has been scaled back due to budget cuts, just as the number of beachgoers increases at the start of summer.

About 30 janitorial positions were cut when funding for a federal welfare-to-work jobs program was eliminated.

Despite the fiscal challenges, Yaroslavsky is standing behind his promise to come up with the funds.

“With a $23 billion budget, we can find $300,000 to clean,” Yaroslavsky said.

So my health plan does not cover what I pick up in a public restroom and I don’t know what to do! I have got to urinate somewhere? What will I do?

    There’s no money.
Los Angeles County has accepted $28 million in state funding to build a state-of-the-art residence for juvenile offenders.

Probation officials say that a move away from dormitory-style housing common in county juvenile camps and toward a more therapeutic environment is necessary to reduce juvenile offenders repeating criminal behavior.

    1. The Mad Man says:

That explains why we don’t have clean restrooms. Where they urinate is clean and usable but not for the public.

  3. Ned says:

Why don’t people in the local communities just volunteer to clean the bathrooms? Or are people on the Westside too good to clean bathrooms?

Take the Mayor’s salary. He doesn’t earn it anyway!!!!

How about utilizing those non-violent offenders that are in jail? Makes sense since they are already being given free benefits in terms of food, shelter and medical care. We call that in military linggo as…”working party”.

    1. Simon says:

Great idea Jo!!!! We can also get all of the Welfare and food stamp getting deadbeats to do it as well. I bet after one day of doing it they will be out job hunting. It might also make the idea of getting “something for nothing” less attractive.

  6. scott says:

issue a competative bid and hire private janitorial firms like the rest of america does.

  7. jo4210 says:

The courts can send those that are not meted jail terms such as Lindsey Lohan to do the work. Sure that can be demeaning but it will certainly teach them a lesson.

  8. bob says:

Good idea, Jo, but in order to send offenders there, they need security, ie. sheriff’s deputies, police officers, or state correctional officers. There salaries run higher than the wages they would pay to the cleaning crews that they don’t have the money to pay for.
@Scott – competitive bids are a great idea, however none times out of ten the bid comes in too low; once the contract actually starts, they realize it will cost more – hence the overages we always hear about with government contracts.
It’s great people care and are coming up with ideas. Hopefully Zev who has been on the board of supervisors for far too long can figure this one out.

Where are the 10’s of millions of $$$ which are allocated to each supervisor’s discretionary account for district related needs???? Each supervisor could cough up $0.5M and there would be plenty to hire back the workers. Better that than Ridley-Thomas trying to spend million$$$ to remodel an office the Burke already left in a remodeled condition.

Why not use the thousands of dollars and jewelry recovered each day by the county beach cleaners?
Ya know how much they’ve kept over the decades, untaxed, after sifting the debris out of public beaches?

hmmmmmmmmmm…they could each use $60,000 from their ‘slush’ fund that they can use anyway they want. Didn’t Molina save from her ‘sluch’ fund for years to open a Hispanic Cultural center or something? I will not be surprised when they ‘find’ the money for this.
