Girl On Life Support, DUI Suspect Arrested After Irvine Crash

IRVINE (CBS) — A 14-year-old girl is on life support after a possible DUI crash in Irvine Sunday morning.

Ashton Sweet is in grave condition, but her parents have chosen to sustain her on a breathing machine so her organs may be evaluated for donation.

Irvine police say the decision was made after they received information from doctors regarding the significance and irreversible nature of her brain injuries.

Friends and family held a vigil Sunday night at Culver Drive and Irvine Boulevard, where the Northwood High School ninth grader was injured in a head-on collision with a DUI suspect.

Austin Farley, 26, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to a DUI charge, and in 2006, he pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license and refused to submit to a test for driving under the influence.

Sweet was in a Mercedes with three other friends, one of whom was also critically injured. The father of one of the girls was driving.

Students are asked to wear white when they return to Northwood High School Tuesday.
