Search Underway For Suspect In Watts Deputy-Involved Shooting

WATTS (CBS) — Sheriff's deputies were unsuccessful in finding a suspected car thief, who fled into the Nickerson Gardens housing project, in Watts.

Sgt. Michael Thomas of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said a perimeter around the apartment was still in place nearly eight hours after the search began.

"They're still searching, they're starting to bring relief in and having those guys who search for him (earlier) go home," Thomas said. "There is no timetable of when the search will end."

The search was triggered about 6:30 a.m. Sunday near 114th Street and Compton Avenue after a deputy reportedly fired a single shot at a man believed to be armed, Thomas said. The suspect managed to get away.

Thomas said the suspect, described as a black male adult, may be tied to a vehicle theft.
