Female Passenger Killed In Male Driver's Alleged DUI

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A man was critically injured and his female passenger killed early Monday morning after the car he was allegedly driving under the influence slammed into a wall and overturned in South Los Angeles.

Darleen Rosemary Monarrez, 22, of Long Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:41 a.m. single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Broadway and Century Boulevard, said Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter.

Los Angeles police Sgt. Ruben Vega said two men and two women were pinned inside the car, and firefighters had to extricate them.

The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in critical condition, the sergeant said. The other two passengers were not seriously hurt.

Vega said it is believed the driver was under the influence of alcohol, and he could be booked on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter when his condition improves.
