Ramona High's Senior Class Witnesses Live DUI Sentencing

RIVERSIDE (CBS) — School officials and Riverside police hosted an unusual pre-prom event for Ramona High School's senior class Thursday morning – a live drunk driving sentencing.

A Riverside Superior Court DUI sentencing, complete with a judge in black robes, a bailiff and DUI defendant, took place at Ramona High's auditorium, in an effort to drive home the message, "Don't drink and drive."

A DUI defendant who had pleaded guilty to two criminal charges volunteered to have his sentencing done in front of the students, in the hopes that they would see the serious consequences and choose not to drink and drive. He did not want his face shown nor his name released.

The 19-year-old defendant was found slumped over the steering wheel and incoherent. Police say he was drunk and high on pot when they found his car idling in the middle of a street.

The school's prom takes place Saturday.
