Armenian-Americans Honor Victims Of 1915 Genocide
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A special vigil was held in Glendale Saturday night to honor the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. This year marks the 96th Anniversary of the massacre in Turkey.
Part of the vigil included a display of photographs and art. Organizers say the event is not only about recognizing the Armenians who were killed, but also about calling on world leaders to recognize the slaughter as a genocide.
"My grandma was an orphan of the Armenian Genocide and it is very personal, not only for me but for many Armenians who have lost relatives, who have lost belongings, who have lost homes within the Ottoman Empire," organizer Aroutin Hartounian said
Demonstrators plan to walk through the community known as Little Armenia in Hollywood on Sunday.
A separate demonstration is expected to take place starting at 4 p.m. outside the Turkish Consulate on Wilshire Boulevard.
