Convicted Rapist Charged With 1984 Cold Case Murder, Rape

ANAHEIM (AP) — A man already imprisoned for rape has been charged with the 1984 murder and rape of an 84 year-old Southern California woman.

Richard Stanley Sandoval of Santa Ana was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder in the commission of rape or attempted rape.

Authorities say Sandoval killed victim Margaret Lenney at the Anaheim apartment complex she owned on Sept. 23, 1984.

Sandoval, who had been fired from a painting job at the complex, was identified as a possible suspect at the time but released.

Prosecutors say recent DNA testing linked him to the case and investigators retested DNA evidence preserved from the scene.

The 57-year-old would have been released Wednesday after serving his time on a 1985 rape conviction.

Sandoval will be arraigned Thursday in Orange County Superior Court.
