Ordinance Will Limit Size Of Hillside Homes In LA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles officials are taking a stand against sprawling, soaring homes in hillside neighborhoods.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says he'll sign the so-called Hillside Mansionization Ordinance at a news conference Wednesday.

The ordinance unanimously approved by the City Council in March limits the size of homes that can be built on hillside lots.

It uses a formula that takes into account parcel size, steepness of slopes and other factors. Supporters say the ordinance will keep hillsides from getting overdeveloped, KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports.

The ordinance was written following complaints by residents that homes were being built that were out of scale with existing buildings.

Officials passed a similar ordinance in 2008 for the city's flatlands.

The hillside ordinance took more work because the steepness of some terrain made it harder to calculate allowable home sizes.
