Glendale Teacher Found On Side Of 210 Freeway Likely Suicide

LA CRESCENTA (CBS) —  The sheriff's department announced Tuesday that the Glendale man whose body was found on the shoulder of the Foothill (210) Freeway in La Crescenta last Friday committed suicide.

Sheriff's detectives initially thought Kirk Allen Spiegel might be a homicide victim.

The body of the 49-year-old Spiegel was found about 2 a.m. last week on the westbound Foothill Freeway at Ocean View Boulevard.

Spiegel was a Los Angeles Unified School District elementary teacher who had been on medical leave since last year.

It was unknown why Spiegel had been on medical leave, but a school district official confirmed he was an employee.

A LAUSD spokeswoman told LA Weekly that Spiegel had not received a pink slip and that he was a second-grade teacher at Pinewood Elementary. She added that he had taught at the school for at least 15 years.
