COSTA MESA (AP) — A Southern California man armed with a machete has been arrested for assault.

Costa Mesa police Sgt. Stephanie Selinske says 19-year old Robert Hopkins Jr. was arrested Sunday night near the a theaters complex. Investigators say Hopkins told officers he had hidden the 25-inch machete under a movie theater seat and it was recovered.

A 911 caller told police just before 9 p.m. that he was being assaulted by a man carrying a machete. The man wasn’t hurt.

The sergeant says Hopkins has been booked for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon. Bail is set at $25,000.
