Saturday's 'Supermoon' Will Be Biggest, Closest Since 1993

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — Saturday's full moon won't just any old full moon – it'll be a super full moon.

NASA says the full moon that will rise Saturday will be a super "perigee moon" – the biggest in almost 20 years.

Scientists estimate the "supermoon" rising in the east at sunset will appear 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter at its peak.

It will be more than 221,000 miles away -- the closest to Earth since March 1993.

NASA says the best time to view this rare lunar sight is when the moon is near the horizon, when the low-hanging moon will appear unnaturally large through the trees, buildings and other foreground objects.

Moonrise is estimated at 7:29 p.m. Saturday for the Los Angeles area, according to timeanddate.com.
