LOS ANGELES (CBS)  — Metro commuters stopped a teenage girl from being kidnapped by a registered sex offender Thursday afternoon in South Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the attempted abduction occurred around 2 p.m. Thursday at the Avalon Green Line station. As many as 10 metro commuters stepped in to interrupt it before police arrived.

“We responded to a fight in progress,” said Office Steve Whitmore. “What happened was 10 commuters came to this girl’s aid … and there was a fight. That is when we got there.”

According to police, the victim fled, and her rescuers did not get her name or exact age. The suspect has been identified as 46-year-old James Burnett, who according to California’s Registered Sex Offender list has previously been charged with rape by force.

“The suspect hobbled onto an arriving train, and as he was arriving at the Imperial passenger station, that is where we arrested him,” Whitmore said. “Later we watched on closed-circuit video and saw the crime and attempted kidnap take place and saw the passengers come to the girl’s aid.”

Police said Friday that the victim came forward and is reportedly fine.

Just gross. We need tougher penelities for pedophiles and sex offenders in this country. I say we all hang them and move on with our lives. We dont need people out like that in the streets.

    1. James says:

Well, he wasn’t on the street; he was on the train.

  6. Buck says:

I hope his hobbling was from a good beating. Wish he was wheelchair bound from it though. That way it would be much harder to hurt a child.

  7. Greg says:

this is what it’s going to take, vigilante justice, the people know how to take care of kidnappers, rapists and pedophiles. High 5 to all that helped

  8. Jim Koy says:

That was an act of self-defense by proxy–not “vigilante justice” (i.e., the beating was completely legal and justified). Unfortunately, the misogynistic pervert survived long-enough for the cops to rescue it (so that it can heal-up in jail in order to prey on society after being soon-released again)…

i wish they would have broken his neck!!!!!

Kinda strange the teen girl hasn’t come forward. Maybe there’s more to this story that we should know.about.

  11. Robear says:

repeat sex offenders should be castrated

  12. Jeffro says:

How many more times does it have to be said, sex offenders have an incurable disease. All “rape by force” offenders as well as pedophiles need to get life without parole on their first offense. Granted this may lead to these perverts resorting to killing their victims, but I think in the long run it would be beneficial to make it the law. This deviant had a lot of balls trying to kidnap someone in a busy place at 2pm. God knows what sex crimes he’s gotten away with.

somebody should have cut off his nuts and stuff it in his mouth LOL

  14. Astonished says:

The “Megan’s Law” website states he was a transient. While I totally agree with every post here, I wonder if he did this in order to get back into jail so he could eat.

No matter, as far as I’m concerned violent sex offenders have only one way to redeem themselves . . . as fertilizer!
