U.S. Navy Sending Aid Ships To Japan

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS) — The United States Navy is preparing to send several ships to aid Japan.

The ships are all based in the Pacific. Officials say the air-craft carrier USS Ronald Reagan is en route to Japan, but is over one day away. The Pentagon say the Reagan has airlift capabilities and can provide medical facilities, fresh water supplies and render other aid if needed.

The Navy has also sent two ships with landing craft capabilities to the earthquake ravaged nation.

Navy officials say the ships are carrying supplies and Marines.

Many of the ships are not expected to arrive until Saturday.
