Compton School Board Rejects Recommended Charter School Operator

COMPTON (AP) —  The Compton Unified school board has rejected a charter school operator a parents' group had recommended to take over a failing elementary school.

The board Tuesday night voted 5-1 against approving Celerity Educational Group, the latest of several applications by charter operators to run a district school.

The move comes as the district is fighting a court battle over a petition filed by parents at McKinley Elementary School under the state's so-called parent trigger law, which allows parents to force turnaround measures at a failing school.

McKinley parents want Celerity to take over the school, but board members said they wanted to compare Celerity's performance to other charter operators.
