Downed Tree Damages Home, Injures Resident, 59

LOS ANGELES (CBS) —  A 59-year-old man was hospitalized with minor injuries he suffered when a tree toppled over onto his house Monday night in South Los Angeles.

The downed tree at 8820 S. Wall St., near 88th Street, was reported at 8:29 p.m., according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

"The man was in his front room working at his computer when he heard a loud bang and then ducked for cover," Humphrey said. "His quick thinking and action minimized his injuries."

The unidentified victim suffered minor abrasions and a slight injury to his lower back, said Humphrey. He was taken to a hospital in good condition.

A second person along with the injured victim will have to find alternate housing as a result of the damage, Humphrey said.

It was not immediately known whether the brisk winds caused the downed tree.
