San Onofre Nuke Plant Completes Costly Retrofit
DANA POINT (AP) — The San Onofre nuclear power plant has returned to full power after completing a costly retrofit.
The San Diego Union-Tribune says Unit 3 at the San Diego County coastal plant began producing electricity Friday morning. It was shut down last fall to be refueled and its two aging steam generators were replaced.
The plant's other reactor, Unit 2, had similar work and went back online last year.
The total retrofit cost more than $670 million and required workers to cut holes in the plant's nuclear containment domes.
San Onofre provides about 20 percent of San Diego's power.
