LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A cure for baldness may have been accidentally discovered by scientists studying mice and stress at UCLA.

In a study between UCLA and the Veterans Association, researchers were looking at the connection between stress and the digestive system with a new medication when they discovered the drug had beneficial side effects that treated baldness.

The scientists were conducting research on lab mice that had been genetically altered to develop head-to-tail baldness as the result of an overproducing stress hormone. Using a new medication, the researchers treated the mice for five days. When they returned to the experiment three months later, “we saw the mice and all the mice had full heads of hair,” researcher Dr. Million Mulugeta said.

Scientists say they were able to get the hair to grow back in the lab mice 90% of the time with the drug.

In another experiment, Dr. Mulugeta and his team also treated non-genetically altered young mice with the drug before balding. The study found that their hair never fell out.

“[It] prevents the hair loss as a preventive treatment as much as a curative treatment,” said researcher Dr. Yvette Tache.

The study also found that aside from preventing and curing hair loss, the drug had an affect on the mice’s skin pigment. Dr. Mulugeta suggests that the drug could have an affect on the color of hair, including gray.

The scientists say they are still in the early stages of their work and that it may take another five years of research before the drug is available for humans.

Hurry up–my hairline doesn’t have five more years of waiting. 😉

I posted more than 10 years ago that any hair loss caused by stress would regrow when the stresswas removed. Thy just proved me right.

You don’t have to wait 5 or more years, r even 5 more days to regrow your hair lost to AGA. I and others have been regrowing our scalp hair by removing our body hair from the follicles. This gets the needed nutrients to grow hair flowing to the scalp follicles again and reving them, instead of being wasted on unwanted hair.
Think back, you began losing scalp hair at about the same time as you started to grow a lot of body and face hair, why not reverse the situation.

All you people who believe that DHT cause AGA, consider this, we are born with DHT, yet we only lose hair after puberty, allways in the same pattern, and only some people. Doesn’t make sense to me. If only scalp hair is supposedly affected by dht, that would mean that those who bald only at the crown, have scalp only at the crown, those who bald at teh crown and temples have scalps in those areas only, and those with diffuse balding have intermittant scalps. Rubbish, dht is needed to grow hair, that is why inhibiting it cause more hair loss in the long term.

Minoxidil was supposed to be a cure 25 years ago. It rarely works.

Don’t get your hopes up on this one. Sorry for the bad news.

works like a charm for me. This probably will too. Sorry for my good news.

Why isn’t a “Manhattan Project”-like effort being put into the development of a baldness cure? Instead of hundreds of billions being wasted on corporate bailouts, a project on this scale is where the money needs to go.

This is perhaps the most important research of our time in terms of human misery. A cure of baldness could very well open doors for other diseases like cancer etc.,

I have been trying to get the medical world and media interested in my findings concerning AGA fo more than 20 years. Although my method is quite primitive and slow, so was the first autos. Look at them now,
I have been saying for many years that the real cure for hair loss will come when they figure out how to get the body to produce more 5 a-reductase, stop the body from growing body hair, we who bald after we grow body hair have a deficiency of 5 a-r,{ the new growth of hair uses up this limited supply before it reaches the scalp hair follicles }, or when they invent a synthetic 5 a-r. That has been done, but it is still sitting on a shelf in Texas. They mention it as a potential cure for AGA, I sent them my findings. no reply.
The problem is, if the medical world didn’t think of it, they don’t want to hear about it. And the media, you send them the info, they contact the meds and you can guess waht their reply is, they say it won;t work, yet they have never came up with acure themselves. Thia also happens with any new ideas, those who have never had an idea in their lives poohpooh it

I USE HAIROBICS PRODUCTS TO REGROW HAIR AND IT DEFINITELY WORKS. IT’S SIMPLE, JUST RUB IT IN AND FORGET ABOUT IT. I EVEN BURNED MY ARM WHILE COOKING, GRABBED THE HAIROBICS AND DID NOT GET A BLISTER . BOUGHT IT AT C-OPS IN SANTA MONICA.

    1. ISAAC says:

BUT NOW I HAVE TO SHAVE AND WAX MY ARM DAILY OR I GET A 3CM TUFT OF HAIR GROWING OUT. IT GOT ALL WEDGED IN MY CAPSLOCK KEY LAST WEEK. MAJOR BUMMER. DAMN YOU HAIROBICS.

Seriously. When has science ever produced a treatment for anything?

I remember when scientists claimed they would someday be able to prevent polio, and have pills that would kill off bacterial infections. Of course, nothing ever came of that.

And it’s not just medicine either – people used to talk about machines that would replace horses for locomotion or produce light without flame. This is why congress is right to cut funding for the NIH and NSF – they can’t get anything done.

This will never come out. Big Pharma doesnt want cures, they want to keep you on drugs for as long as possible. Anyway, yeah backroom deals will keep this discovery from ever being found
