Same-Sex Couples Request Marriage Licenses In Prop. 8 Protest

EAST LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Dozens of same-sex couples tried to get married Monday in Los Angeles despite Proposition 8.

The event was part of a nationwide effort called, "Request Marriage," where same-sex couples try to obtain marriage licenses, knowing they would get turned away. The event is an attempt to win support for the repeal of California's Proposition 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

Attorney Gloria Allred spoke at the event and accompanied couples as they asked for licenses. Allred and her firm are responsible for challenging same-sex marriages in California. The case has appeared twice before the California Supreme Court on behalf of their clients, Robin Tyler and Diane Olson.

A decision in the federal case challenging Prop. 8 is pending in the California Supreme Court and is expected soon, possibly this week.
