UTLA Chief Slams LAUSD Delay For Cortines Replacement

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Unified School District board is expected on Tuesday to promote the district's second-in-command to replace soon-to-retire Superintendent Ramon Cortines.

Some observers said Monday the board of the huge district should have considered candidates other than Deputy Superintendent John Deasy.

AJ Duffy, president of teachers union United Teachers Los Angeles, says the board should have carried out a national search.

Others say the expected appointment's sudden nature smacks of maneuvering.

Dan Isaacs, an official of the association representing principals and district managers, says the process should have been more open and transparent. He noted the board said it would undertake a search to replace Cortines, who is expected to retire in the spring.
