Officials ID Woman Fatally Struck In South LA

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Coroner's investigators Sunday released the identity of the woman who was struck by a pick-up truck and then run over by a Metro bus in South Los Angeles.

Maria Casteneda-Nunez of Lawndale was fatally struck in the accident on Central Avenue near 88th Street about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police and coroner's Investigator Jerry McKibben.

"She was struck by a truck, then an MTA bus," Los Angeles police Officer D. Ramirez of the South Traffic Division said.

Ramirez said the pickup truck driver left the scene, but surrendered to police at the Southeast Station shortly afterward. The driver was detained for questioning and released, pending the outcome of an investigation.

Metro officials were cooperating with authorities to identify the bus that struck the 66-year-old woman, Ramirez said.

An autopsy is pending.
