'Y&R' Actress Explores Her Roots In A Play She Wrote And Directed

LOS ANGELES  (CBS) — She plays the tough, yet tender-when-she-needs-to-be, Sofia on CBS' "The Young and the Restless."

Appearing on a daytime soap opera is sometimes a daunting schedule, but Julia Pace Mitchell who plays Sofia, carved out enough free time to write, produce, choreograph, direct and star in (she might have also made the coffee during production) a new play about her growing up in Baldwin Hills.

Called "The Hills Above The Hood," the play explores Mitchell's life from childhood to making it in Hollywood.

She shared some of those tales Thursday as an in-studio guest on KCAL 9 News at 2 p.m.

There will be three performances during the weekend of December 17-19 at the El Centro Theater in Hollywood, California. The performances benefit the Curt Flood Youth Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping underpriveleged youth.

Pace Mitchell is the daughter of actors Judy Pace ("Brian's Song") and Don Mitchell ("Ironside"). After Pace divorced Mitchell, she married baseball great Curt Flood, hence the connection to the non-profit.

"Hills Above the Hood" won Backstage West Awards for best new playwright, best performance and best new director.
