Reduce Cancer Risks By Testing For Radon
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Each year in the United States exposure to indoor radon gas causes thousands of preventable lung cancer deaths.
In fact, health officials have warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
Extensive research has shown that radon causes lung cancer in both smokers and nonsmokers. Exposure to both smoking and radon greatly enhances the risk of lung cancer.
Radon is estimated to cause about 14,000 deaths per year.
According to Radon Specialist Terry Howell, radon can accumulate in both old and new homes, office buildings, high-rises and schools.
There are some areas that have higher concentrations than others. Researchers said testing for radon is the only way to find hot spots.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency has instructions on testing kits and potential radon fixed.
