Explosives-Filled House Site Declared Safe After Burn

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) — San Diego County authorities say all the explosives and hazardous materials have been destroyed at a home burned down this week in a controlled fire.

The county declared the area free of danger in a statement Saturday after a sheriff's bomb and arson unit sifted through the ashes and debris Friday.

Federal prosecutors say the Escondido rental home contained the largest amount of certain homemade explosives ever found in a single U.S. location.

Law enforcement and fire officials burned it down Thursday after deciding it was the safest option.

An unemployed software consultant has been charged in the case.

The statement says that on Monday state, county and private crews will begin hauling soil, ash and scrap from the house to a landfill.
