Wednesday, Dec. 8, CBS2/KCAL9 helped the CHP kick off the Highway Patrol's annual "Chips for Kids"  holiday toy drive, starting on our CBS2 News, 4:30-7 a.m. Here's what you didn't see on the air:

Sibila (5'2") wanted to make sure that all knew she's not a shrimp, just because she looks short, standing next to Kent (6'3"). Kent (6'3"), was equally concerned that I would look like a hulking oaf, next to the petite Sibila (5'2").

Josh -- who did a killer job, playing the role of meteorologist and ringmaster -- finally met Lisa Stanley ( co-host of The K-Earth Morning Show With Gary Bryan) and was impressed with her kindness, which was reflected in her making sure we all knew that her fur jacket was indeed faux fur.  My long-time amigo Gary Bryan, BTW, continues to amaze me after all these years with his good nature and relaxed style. Gary and Lisa work perfectly together: it was fun to watch them in front of our studio (then go back inside where it is warm).

Traffic reporter Whitney told us all the story about how she went on a CHP ride-along, and that the officer showing her the ropes actually let her write a ticket.  This led to a morning of interrogation by the rest of us:  Was it her call to make? Did she approach the offending vehicle?  For the love of God, was she given a gun? Turns out, the answer to all was 'no.' She filled in the little boxes on the ticket form, only.  I knew the CHP was a professional organization.

You can make a needy kid's holiday a lot better, with the donation of an unwrapped toy to any "Chips for Kids" drop-off location, here in Southern California.  Do it, and you'll have a better holiday as well.  I promise.
