LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Tis the season to be jolly and for many people the season to also overindulge.

Too much food? Too much cheer? Too much wine? Don't whine! Help is here. And let's not forget...too much spending?

All those parties can add up and kill a budget. How to save and still entertain and be considered a great host?

Kevin Gilpatrick, of Party City, was an in-studio guest on KCAL 9 News at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

He talked about simple and budget-friendly ways to celebrate the holidays without getting the holidays blues.

Gilpatrick said planning is a must and most of all he recommends keeping your spending in check. Easier said than done? Not according to Gilpatrick who says to create and stick to a budget.

Plus, he also says to be creative with activities during your parties. He recommends a "Dirty Santa" gift exchange. And for the record, he was referring to dirty as in "wacky."
