SAN DIEGO (AP) — U.S. authorities say they seized tons of marijuana in connection with a cross-border tunnel that was equipped with a rail car — the second discovery of a major underground drug passage in San Diego this month.
Authorities Seize Tons Of Pot In Cross-Border Tunnel: KNX 1070’s Tom Reopelle reports.
Mike Unzueta of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the passage ran 2,200 feet from a home’s kitchen in Tijuana, Mexico, to two warehouses in San Diego.
Unzueta says the tunnel is believed to be the work of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel.
Two people were arrested in the United States and five in Mexico. Authorities seized nearly 14 tons of marijuana at a nearby Border Patrol checkpoint Thursday. An undetermined amount of pot was found inside the tunnel in the U.S. and in Mexico.
