2 Cats Killed In Long Beach Apartment Fire

LONG BEACH (CBS) — Two cats were killed Thursday in an apartment fire in Long Beach, authorities said.

The fire in the 200 block of Covina Avenue was reported at 5:45 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting out of a second-floor window in the four-unit building, Steve Yamamoto of the Long Beach Fire Department said.

Two cats were found dead inside once the fire was put out, he said. No one was home when the fire started, Yamamoto said.

Yamamoto said a roof deck on the building collapsed, and a firefighter who fell through the roof was uninjured. A damage estimate was unavailable.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.
