3 Men Killed After Plane Crashes In Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH (AP) — Authorities say a single-engine plane has crashed into a bay in Newport Beach, killing the three men inside.

Newport Beach Fire Division Chief Paul Matheis says firefighters found the plane upside down in shallow water shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday in Upper Newport Harbor, and found the pilot and two passengers dead.

Their names have not been released, but Matheis says they are all men.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the Beechcraft Musketeer had taken off from an unknown point in Mexico and was bound for Torrance, Calif.

Matheis says firefighters saw the troubled plane flying low over a station, and the pilot reported problems to the tower at nearby John Wayne Airport.

Investigators from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
