San Bernardino Tax Official Faces Corruption Trial

SAN BERNARDINO (AP) — A former San Bernardino County tax official must stand trial for corruption.

A judge on Monday ruled there's probable cause to try ex-assessor Bill Postmus on eight felony charges that include grand theft, drug possession and misappropriating public funds. He dismissed two other counts.

Co-defendant Greg Eyler, a former assessor's office employee, will face trial on a grand theft count.

Both men have pleaded not guilty.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says prosecutors accuse Postmus of using public money to buy airline tickets, fund a road trip to Colorado and pay for employees who did little public work.

Eyler is accused of being paid for hours he didn't work.

Postmus could face more than 9 1/2 years in prison if convicted.

Eyler could get three years.
